Artist: Attributed to William Rush

Dimensions: 11 ¼” H; 41 ¼” W; 11 ½” D

This carved and gilt eagle is attributed to William Rush (1756–1833), a Philadelphia-born sculptor who gained renown carving figureheads and ornaments for merchant ships. He went on to become a prominent artist in Philadelphia and a founding member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

This report details the examination of the eagle, including X-radiography of its joinery, and compiles historical research of other related works by Rush in order to more fully inform the object's attribution to the artist.
